Irchester Utd 2 - 1 Amersham Town
Amersham Town missed the opportunity to climb up the table after a string of good results with this defeat to bottom of the table Irchester United. Town fell two goals behind in the first half and, although they pulled one back in the second through a penalty and pressed hard for an equaliser, they fell to their second defeat of the New Year.
On a bumpy pitch and against the wind Amersham were unable to gain a foothold in the game. Amersham’s best attack came when Kyle Duncan-Johnson hit a fine cross which Harry Bennett met at the far post to direct just wide. It was, however, no surprise that the home side took the lead after twenty minutes when a free kick from about twenty yards was curled into the top corner giving Town keeper Zac Green no chance.
Irchester then increased their lead fifteen minutes later when the Town defence failed to clear their lines and a forward shot home.
With the wind behind them in the second half Amersham improved, ‘though without unduly troubling the Irchester keeper. After seventy minutes, however, they were handed a lifeline when, following a corner and goalmouth scramble, an Irchester player handled on the line. Bennett confidently struck home the penalty.
For the remainder of the half Amersham strove without success for an equaliser. Their cause was not helped when captain Paolo Deritis was dismissed for a second yellow card, 'though that was cancelled by an opposition player receiving a straight red.
On the balance of play Irchester deserved their win for a sprightly performance which belied their lowly position. Amersham, however, will need to do better at home to Raunds Town next Saturday if they are to regain their winning ways.
