Town go down in a tight game.

Updated: Jan 12, 2020

Shefford Town & Campton 2: Amersham Town 1.

Although Shefford Town & Campton sit fifth in the table and Amersham Town fifteenth the apparent gap in class would not have been apparent to any spectator. This was a well contested game with both sides trying to play their football and hardly a foul in sight.

Shefford almost opened the scoring in the second minute when Adam Drakulic was put through but fractionally delayed his shot allowing a fine saving tackle from Luke Symons. Drakulic’s team mate Sam King then tried a curling shot from the edge of the area which just cleared the bar.

It was Amersham, however, who took the lead in the eighteenth minute. Debut keeper Mackenzie Taylor launched a long kick downfield which found Tom Littleboy. He still had a lot to do, beating three players and then feeding the ball out to Alec Wallace on the left. Wallace calmly passed the ball across Shefford keeper Reece Lewis and into the far corner of the net.

The lead lasted only eight minutes as the Town defence was caught napping by a quick throw which released a Shefford attacker and his cross presented King with a simple tap in. Shefford’s top scorer Henry Snee then found room for a low shot which Taylor did well to save at full stretch to his left.

The second half continued to be a game of few chances as both defences were well drilled. Snee forced his way down the right but Taylor was well positioned at the near post to save. Town were then undone by a defensive error. In trying to head back to his keeper the Amersham defender left the ball markedly short of pace allowing Drakulic to nip in and slot the ball past the exposed Taylor.

Amersham then had a chance to equalise with nine minutes remaining on the clock. Alec Wallace burst through the middle and rounded Lewis but, from a narrow angle, was unable to get sufficient pace on the ball allowing a defender to clear off the line. Neither side really threatened after that leaving Amersham disappointed with the result.

Amersham Town: Taylor, Aldridge, Mistretta, Hagan, Symons, Wilson, Al-Murtada, Grant, Thomas, Littleboy, Wallace. Subs: Johnson, Ankrah, Andrews, Rodney, Spence.
