Town win with a stunning goal
London Tigers 1: Amersham Town 2.
On a freezing cold evening this was a game of contrasting styles. London Tigers played some intricate football but were let down in the final third of the field. Amersham Town were more direct and created the better scoring chances, drawing some fine saves from Tigers keeper, Luciano Martins.
In the first twenty minutes chances were hard to come by for both sides. Amersham had a free kick on the edge of the area which came to nothing and a quick Tigers counter attack resulted in a low cross just wide of the far post. Town’s Reon Thomas and Harry Andrews both had strong shots from distance parried by Martins before Amersham took the lead in the twenty third minute. From wide on the right Jack Aldridge delivered a dangerous swinging cross which a defender, in trying to head clear, succeeded only in diverting the ball into the far corner of the net past the despairing Martins. At the other end Amersham’s Mackenzie Taylor saved well when Mourad Jarraz was put through on goal.
The second half was only two minutes old when Tigers equalised. Amersham lost the ball to the right of midfield and a quick forward pass found a Tigers attacker with time and space to plant the ball past Taylor. Three minutes later Amersham almost regained the lead when good work by Andrews resulted in a cross which Thomas just failed to reach. After a Tigers forward pulled the ball wide of Taylor’s post from a good position Amersham countered and seemed certain to score. Josh Johnson was found on the left and his low cross invited the Amersham attack to slot home. Martins, however, spread himself well and diverted the ball with his legs. It was to no avail as Town scored one minute later. An attack down the right led to a ball infield to Mohamed Al-Murtada twenty eight yards from goal. He took one touch and launched an unstoppable drive into the roof of Martins’ net.
Amersham could then have added to their lead in the third minute of injury time but Martins deflected on to the bar a goal-bound free kick from Johnson.
