Amersham Town 1: Cogenhoe Utd 4.
Buildbase FA Vase; First Qualifying Round.
Playing in the FA Vase a team a level higher than them was always going to be a challenge for Amersham but they made life more difficult for themselves by conceding two soft goals in the first eight minutes. They then competed well for the remainder of the half, pulling a goal back, but fell away badly after the break.
After only six minutes Town’s keeper, Jake Edwards-Alley failed to reach a free kick from the left allowing Cogenhoe’s Adam Speight an easy header into the empty net. Two minutes later, from a cross, a header was directed back across the Amersham goal and an unmarked Nat Ansu slipped the ball past Edwards-Alley.
After those early setbacks Amersham gradually worked their way back into the game, playing some good football. They pulled a goal back on twenty seven minutes when a long cross from the left was put back across goal by Nico Hounto and defected off a defender high into the air. Amersham’s Ashley Ankrah was the first to react and headed home.
Unfortunately, Amersham had not learnt the lesson of the first half and conceded a third goal four minutes after the re-start. In a sweeping move down the right the ball was pulled across edge of the Amersham penalty area for a Cogenhoe midfielder to sweep the ball into the corner of the net for a well worked goal.
Amersham were unable to muster the quality of football displayed in the first half and were grateful to Edwards-Ally for some excellent blocks as the Cogenhoe forwards pushed through the Amersham defence. Although Amersham enjoyed a fair share of possession their forwards were unable to break through and Bradley Lashley in the Cogenhoe goal enjoyed an untroubled forty five minutes. Cogenhoe completed the scoring in the seventy second minute when an Edwards-Alley punch from a corner fell to Aynsley McDonald who drove home low through a crowd of players.
